As the draft progresses, Ryan Smith, Michael Larson, and Giovanni Militano will break down each of Oakland’s picks. They will be asked if they like the pick, if the player will make an immediate impact on the team, if there’s another player they liked more, and how’d they grade the selection. This is the official draft reaction page for the Raiders department of Last Word on Pro Football.
Oakland Raiders Seventh Round Draft Reaction
With the 221st Pick in the Seventh Round, the Oakland Raiders Select…Shalom Luani, S, Washington State
1. Do You Like the Pick?
2. Why or Why Not?
Smith: Because at this point, the Raiders are just taking flyers. A lot of these players won’t make the 53.
Larson: Was one of the few NFL worthy players on the Washington State defense and is a hard hitting safety that can provide depth if he makes it past cuts.
Militano: Oakland lost some safety depth in the off-season. Luani is possible depth and can compete for a roster spot.
3. Will This Player Make An Immediate Impact on the Team?
Larson: No. Unless he advances very quickly, the only impact on the field he should be making is on special teams.
Militano: No. Luani is a 7th round draft pick. The Raiders have their pieces in the secondary already. At the most, Shalom Luani will be a special teamer with limited playing time.
4. Is There Another Player You Wanted Instead, and If So, Who?
Smith: C-. He’s a raw prospect with a ton of holes in his game. Maybe he can develop into a special teams player, but for now, he’ll likely just see the practice squad.
Larson: C. Shalom Luani’s hard hits will come in handy at moments of the season if he makes the cuts. Very raw safety.
Militano: B-. They’ve reached the 7th round. If teams can come away with special teamers with some upside, it’s good. This is a solid, late round pick.
